my lecture on mass production and consumption  →
One of the sessions I delivered for a module called Contemporary Issues - a course designed to feed visual theory and design history to studio practice students at Winchester Sch of Art. This link points to a blog post in response to my lecture. Food for thought.

Archizines LIVE - A Review
I dropped in at the AA for Archi-zines Live, an exhibition curated by Elias Redstone of fanzines about architecture. The exhibition was, in true AA style, really well put together and the zines on display featured from around the world, NYC, Chile, Japan, China, Canada, France, Netherlands and including familiar UK ones such as lovely newspapers from Preston is My Paris and P.E.A.R., some...

Ouverture Facile
I used to play this flash game a couple of years ago with my ex boyfriend and we only got up to levels 14 or 15, I can’t remember. Now they have updated it with user-generated riddles. Pretty excited to try them out. Warning: not for the impatient game players!

Riots in London
“How, we ask, could youths attack their own community with such disregard? But the young people would reply “easily”, because they feel they don’t actually belong to the community. Community, they would say, has nothing to offer them. Instead, for years they have experienced themselves cut adrift from civil society’s legitimate structures” - Camila...

On the Other Uses of Nutella
Me: We’ve been leaving mice traps in the kitchen but they don’t seem to work. The cheese always disappears but the traps stay empty! Pest control guy: Cheese?! (laughs) That only works in Disney, love. You got to use Nutella, and you have to smear it all over the trap like butter. The rat needs to put its weight on the trap for it to snap. Me: OH 20 minutes later, just as Pest...

RCA Highlights
Can’t remember the last time I sweated so much in one cycle - hottest Sunday of 2011 so far! Took Shelby II to Kensington to see the RCA show today. Few bits of work really stood out for me from the MA Communication Art & Design. First, Joseph Pochodzaj’s Language-Analysis: he analyzed speeches made during the financial crisis by government and/or trade unions, using discourse...

Last week, Vinay Gupta came to WSA and gave an interesting guest lecture about Open Hardware Shelter Technology. He showed us Hexayurts, these geometric, six-sided, plywood shelters he reckons could help solve housing challenges for the world’s climate refugees. I thought they look super: I think it’s a great design solution and idea for a pretty complex humanitarian issue. ...

Source Code *spoilers here*
Just watched Source Code at the cinema - entertaining and pretty exciting. Bit cheesy at times, but the hotness of Jake made up for it. However, I didn’t get the ending. It wasn’t as complicated as Inception. In fact, it was pretty straightforward until the end. Looked it up on wikipedia and apparently it has to do with something called quantum immortality where by if one dies in a...

Camping
me: J wants to go camping this weekend. C: Brilliant! go for it! don’t wimp out. me: I dunno. Is it going to be like glasto? C: what do you mean? me: mud-filled nightmares and peeing into bottles. C: don’t be ridiculous. Most campsites are lush with nice toilets. Have you not gone proper camping before? me: no C: city slicker. me: what do you eat at camp? do you have to catch...

Print Matters: Zines [overdue...]
[I wrote this a while back for an exhibition catalogue - some of my thoughts about zines. Meant to edit it and put it up here but just never got around to it. Anyway, better late than never. Finally, an edited version here] I think that zine is a testament that print still matters, not as a fetishized form, but as a wonderful medium between people and the stuff they put in print. Zinesters make...

Today I attended the third session of a learning and teaching module. The learning expert who was running the module got to the topic of how we can improve the inclusiveness of our classrooms for students with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia.  He told a roomful of art and design sch staff that “comic sans is the recommended, most readable typeface for dyslexic students”

Couldn’t get to sleep - resorted to watching BBC’s Women In Love. Bit of an orgy with somewhat unnecessary outcomes. Annoyingly, Rosamund Pike is becoming an English version of Nicole Kidman.  Tall, blonde and pale leading ladies with skinny arms - yawn. Knew I shd have gone with The Only Way is Essex.

O’s dad is an estate agent specializing in unique properties in the Y valley. me: really? but he said he’s in Bristol this weekend cos he’s got a couple of life-coaching sessions to do. * Adjourn to kitchen for tea with A * R&me: Is O’s dad a life coach...

Went to the Design Museum with our GA students today. Amazing Designs In My Commute
1. The disposable cup lid The genius of my daily morning commute can be pinpointed to the vent hole of this cup lid: Have you ever noticed this hole on your coffee cup lid? This surreptitious vent hole looks almost like an accident; like someone punctured your cup by mistake with a pen. It’s so simple you wouldn’t really think of it as a piece of design. It’s a HOLE. However...
